Your blog wants to resolve things on New Years. Listen to it. Shhh. Yep it’s whispering from the graves of writers, “Carpe Diem.” Oh wait, that’s Dead Poets Society. But it’s probably saying things like, “I want to lose some weight, get rid of some of these plug ins,” and “I need a total makeover, redo my entire design.” Of course, “I want to increase my following, promote the crap out of me this year.”

Countless of over-achieving humanoids have already started making their New Year Resolutions, but some of us in this world wait until the last minute to do things, including setting the goals in the first place. We will probably also procrastinate when we implement those resolutions as well. I’m fine with that.

But our blogs are a part of us, like another us, and it too may want to make some resolutions. Here are some ideas… You don’t have to do all of them. They are just ideas, take and use as relevant and reasonable.

Do an SEO Audit

Search Engine Optimization is really the foundation and back bone of a blog. It does happen quite naturally. Google spends a lot of time and energy revising and updating their algorithm to try to find and filter and present links as natural as possible for the people searching and for the creators of content. But, there are some things you could be doing to improve your presence on Google.

If you haven’t taken a course yet on SEO, maybe now is a good time to do it? I highly recommend Navigating SEO by Lyrical Host (affiliate link).

If you have, you probably have a checklist somewhere to give yourself a good SEO audit just to double check yourself with site speed, domain authority, and make sure your links are working, etc.

Give Your Blog a Quick Makeover

You don’t have to do a complete overhaul, but some minor tweaks to kind of metaphorically represent a quick facial, or in some of our cases, we might need to shave our pits. Metaphorically of course.

I wrote this on my Graphic Design “studio” site: 5 Quick & Simple Things you can do to your Website to Improve its Design

Write or Revise your Business Plan

I don’t care if you have a business that is 30 years old. Ever so often you need to update your Business Plan. Don’t have one? Then it might be a great time to make one.

Every business should have a business plan. Like SBA style Business Plan.

Haha can I make that a “style?” You have APA and MLA, what about SBA? As defined by the Small Business Administration.

But the idea is to calculate, or recalculate, where you are and where you intend to go with your business. With this, you pre-define a lot of things you can re-use for content, web pages, advertising, etc., such as your value proposition.

Also, you almost need to have one of these if ever you decide to apply for a loan.

Pick a Social Media Channel to Focus On

Many of us with blogs have too many social media accounts. It’s just part of the job, creating profiles you later neglect. I personally have not posted anything on my Behance or Dribbble, and I totally forgot Ello existed.

Then there’s those of us who see people mastering a social media like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or Linked In (yeah I met a couple of those), and we start to kind of drool at the idea of making that / those channels a great source of traffic, but do we create an action plan and take the steps?

Make this year the Year of Pinterest or the Year of Instagram where you totally up your game on that location and try all the things people say to do, maybe do some experiments and blog about it, but resolve to make one social media your b-word this year.

Create a New Product

I’m not trying to be extra or overachieve. One new product that you can create, market, and sell…

Hmmm. Maybe a Printable? An Ebook? A full novel? A course? A sock puppet that resembles a poorly drawn dinosaur?

Whatever it is, try to find a product that your readers already buy or something you know they want really really badly. You probably already have some ideas from yesteryear that you thought, “I wish someone made this so that I could…” or “I just had a million dollar idea, but nah too much time…”

Then kind of create a plan to create the product (or obtain it), and create a marketing plan… You should get started right now if you wanted to, I don’t know, make a Secret Pinterest Board for Ideas.

Bonus Idea: Buddy Up with Experts for your Next Big Thing

When you get to a point where you’re trying to scale and grow, when you feel like you capped out on Pinterest Traffic and Facebook Traffic, this is a great idea for you. But if you’re just starting out, it’s still a good idea.

But the idea is actually one I’m stealing from Pinterest. When they started out, the first thing they sought to do was improve the technology. First they wanted to be a mobile app (iphone then android), and then they wanted to focus on smart algorithms and better searching. The entire time they were trying to do this (just a few years), they were partnering up and acquiring businesses who specialized in cutting edge tech and research, or places that employed people with the potential for it. They actually received a lot of funding by teaming up with places, and then acquired places with the funds.

You don’t have to go that big (unless you want to), but you can do that on a smaller scale.

Write a list of goals that you really want to accomplish, and find the areas where you are lacking. Maybe you’d love to design an app in your niche, and you need to find a developer to partner with as a business, like My App, Partnership. Or maybe you have a recipe site, and healthy cuisine might not be your thing but you’d like to reach that market, so find a healthy cuisine blog to “cartel” with where you are still 2 separate business entities, but obviously friends / good fellows.

Your New Year Resolutions is a very personal matter. We all strive for different forms of perfection. So do what you want to do, with purpose, on purpose. I’m sorry, I’m not a Type A personality anymore, but whatever they say for encouragement here… Climb the mountain, conquer your fears, grab life by the balls, just do it, run the extra mile, drink the tears of your enemies, yes you are 100% that bitch… Get Her Done. Kill. (it’s a military thing, maybe too far).

Whatever. I’ll be over here with my New Years Resolutions, “I resolve to eat more bacon.” That’s fine too. I might not get rich, and I might be in last place, but at least I’m happy.

Here’s a little thing I made some random year ago, and you’re more than welcome to print it out for some ideas or a place to start.
